Our Background
The Museum School of Avondale Estates was begun by the Avondale Education Association with a goal of creating an innovative public school for grades K-8 built on academic achievement and strong community involvement. The museum concept is a proven school model that provides project-based learning through partnerships with museums and other community organizations. Students learn collaboratively by engaging in real-world projects and mentorships with these experts.
The effort to bring this school to central DeKalb County began in July 2008 and has truly been a community-wide effort. Since its inception, the school has received tremendous support from government officials and local businesses as well as countless volunteers who generously donated their time and expertise to make the school a reality.
Already, we’ve accomplished so much:
-
The Museum School was one of only three start-up charter schools in Georgia awarded a competitive state planning grant in 2009.
-
Our third graders scored exceptionally well on the 2011 CRCT, which was administered statewide to students in grades 3 and higher. Our students' science scores rank at the very top in the state!
-
Results from the Measures of Academic Progress test show Museum School students learning at a faster rate than the nationwide average.
-
One of The Museum School's teachers was chosen to serve on the Georgia governor's academic advisory board.
-
Several colleges and universities have asked The Museum School to help train young educators in the museum model of education.
-
The school has secured partnership agreements with some of the region's most highly respected institutions, including Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta History Center, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Georgia Aquarium and Zoo Atlanta.
- We have attracted overwhelming student demand, necessitating wait lists for every grade at the time of the student lottery.
