The Museum School

history

The Museum School of Avondale Estates was begun by the Avondale Education Association with a goal of creating an innovative public school for grades K-8 built on academic achievement and strong community involvement. The museum concept is a proven school model that provides project-based learning through partnerships with museums and other community organizations. Students learn collaboratively by engaging in real-world projects and mentorships with these experts.

The effort to bring this school to Avondale and neighboring communities began in July 2008 and has truly been a community-wide effort. Since its inception, the school has received tremendous support from city officials and local businesses as well as countless volunteers who generously donated their time and expertise to make the school a reality.

Already, we’ve accomplished so much:

  • The Museum School is one of only seven schools chartered by the state of Georgia in 2009.

  • It was one of only three start-up charter schools in Georgia awarded a competitive state planning grant in 2009.

  • We have brought together skilled and dedicated individuals to build a governing board with impressive credentials.

  • We have attracted overwhelming student demand, even in our first year, necessitating wait lists for all but one grade level.

  • We are working to secure partnership agreements with some of the region’s most highly respected museums, art groups and universities, including ArtsNow, Atlanta History Center, the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Nature Center and Zoo Atlanta.
